3 Stars - I'm a sucker for fairytale retellings and this one was an adorable, if very loose play on Snow White. This was a bit wordy, sometimes silly romance but plenty of fun. Helena's certainly a headstrong heroine ready to go toe-to-toe with her gruff new groom Declan. Fortunately for her, he secretly has a heart of gold and helps with her schemes.

I read the description thinking there would be some danger afoot, some excitement. And there was a tad. But mostly this was Helena trying to play matchmaker for her own fiancee of five years and enlisting Declan as her accomplice. It was a little dull. The part of them falling in love was cute, sweet, and even a little steamy. But scenes with any danger seemed to fly by while a lot of detail was spent on the prospective replacement fiancees. Declan's mercenary skills seldom came into play but he did get to show his protective side. And Helena's determination and bravery was commendable.

The Snow White retelling angle was well done, just a bit vague. There's a girl named Snow, apples, seven aptly nicknamed girls to choose from for the Duke. But Helena and the Huntsman's story was center of course. The dialouge is flowing, a lot of intricate costume description if you like that sort of thing, and there's just the one particularly sexy scene toward the end. I think I just wanted something a little more. More action, more intrigue, or more scenes where these two could just be together and be themselves. I loved the little epilouge though, thought it was an excellent ending. Period romances are making a strong comeback right now and I'd say this wouldn't be a bad one to start with for new readers. But also a light read for fans of the genre. This was my first read from Michaels. While I'm open to more of her work, particularly a Sleeping Beauty series entry (my personal favorite), I'm not ready to rush out and read the whole collection right now.
